“Expressions”

an exhibit capturing the perspectives of the veteran experience from both veterans and civilians

 

Art is expression made visible by a form. The form, static or dynamic, captures the artist's inner truth and communicates the authentic meaning of the his/her life experiences. Artists strive to comprehend the past and the present with the hope of understanding  the unknown and the transformation of the intricate to the pure.

 

In the tradition of our commitment to support creative minds in our communities, Stone Branch School of Arts and Open Space Art Gallery have created a juried exhibition featuring Metropolitan DC resident artist’s artwork.  This exhibition examines artistic expressions from two different perspectives. One the local artists interpretation of our veterans experiences, and another the veteran artists’ perspective of themselves, expressed through photographs, drawings, sculptures, paintings or other mediums to shed light on their compelling reflections of life and humanity.

Selected art works will be exhibition at the Open Space Art Gallery, with a special opening reception and awards ceremony. The exhibit’s commission will go towards the  establishment of an art education scholarship  for veterans and  their families at Stone branch school of art.

We are looking forward to celebrating the creative works of local resident artists. Our Reception is a worthwhile event, we expect a great turn out, great fun, food, and music! Invitations will be available for you to distribute to friends and family.

AWARDS: Works are judged by grade/age categories, will be awarded First, Second, and Third Place, other recognitions/awards maybe offered to additional works based on special qualities evident in the work. 

FIRST PLACE: $120

SECOND PLACE:  $75

THIRD PLACE: $50

JURORS:  Individuals involved in the selection process include, professional artists, art educators, art administrators, art collectors.

THEME:  All artwork entries MUST depict or be inspired by the artist’s interpretation of a veterans’ experience.

MEDIA:  Works on Paper: Painting oil or Acrylic, Drawing, printmaking, chalk, charcoal, pastels, pencil, wax crayons; inks and washes applied by pen or brush. Photography: Color or black and white. Mixed Media: 2- and 3-dimensional works incorporating more than one type of material in their production, including assemblage and collage. Sculpture: Including wood, metal, stone, glass, mosaics, ceramics, fiber, and recycled materials.

ENTRY IMAGES:  Submit digital images (photos) of the actual artwork(s) to be considered for acceptance into the juried exhibition. An artist may submit up to 3 works. Submissions should be high quality (300 dpi) jpeg’s, maximum 2 MB per image. Remember to put artist’s LAST NAME and ARTWORK TITLE when saving image files to submit. Example (Jenkins-  Rainfall-.jpg ... not image001.jpg). For three-dimensional pieces, please include images of all sides.

SUBMISSION FEE: $35 processing fee for up to 5 works per-artist.

DISPLAY SPECIFICATIONS & GUIDELINES:

We require that all 2-D artwork must be frames and wired across the back as follows:

Small art works must be framed in the following frame measurements:

 8”X 10” (-Minimum size allowed)- 8 ½” X 11” - 9”X12” -11”X14”- 16”X20”-20”X24”-Maximum size allowed 30”x40” framed.

 

DRAWINGS:  matted if needed and framed with glass & wired across the back for

Hanging 3” down from the top of the frame.

PAINTINGS: framed but no glass or matt needed (sectional frames are fine) & wired across the back for hanging 5” below the top of the frame.

PHOTOGRAPHY: must be framed with glass (mats are optional) & wired

across the back for hanging 3” below the top of the back of the frame.

3D POTTERY AND SCULPTURE: must be designed in such way that can be displayed on a pedestal—limit size12x12x24 ” and weight 40lb.

Registration and work submission

Submissions:  must be made by December 21st .  Work submitted without payment will not be considered for the exhibit.

DROP OFF:

All  selected works must be dropped off  on Sat, Jan. 25th 10-5PM and  Sun.26th,11-2pm no late works will be accepted.

Artworks are to be dropped off at OpenSpace Gallery of Art/ adjacent to Stone Branch School of Art. Only drop off framed, wired and labeled pieces as specified above.

ARTWORK Copy: Each work submitted must be accompanied with 2 Completed copies of the label provided below. (Please print and complete).

SALES

The gallery will receive a 30% commission on all artwork sold. The gallery will pay the artist for the sold artwork within 30 days of the close of the exhibition. All artwork must be for sale and priced at a fair market value, and prices reported in the application should take into consideration the commission split.

 

PICK UP:

Artwork must be picked up between Sat. Feb. 22st 10-5pm and Sun. 23nd- 12-3pm (there is a storage fee of $10.00 per day for works that are not picked up after  Sun .23nd).
